Description

PayPal managed to exceed analyst expectations in terms of revenue as well as earnings, reporting a remarkable 9% growth in revenue on a currency-neutral basis and a 20% increase in non-GAAP earnings per share, surpassing guidance expectations. While experiencing a decline of 2.8 million active accounts, primarily in Latin America and Southeast Asia, PayPal is encouraged by the positive trends in new cohorts, attributing the decrease to the intentional removal of low-quality customers. In terms of volume growth, PayPal reported a total payment volume of $387.7 billion, with Braintree being a significant driver. Branded checkout volumes, however, exhibited a nuanced performance. Revenue reached $7.4 billion, growing 9% on a currency-neutral basis, with transaction revenue driven by Braintree and PayPal-branded checkout. Notably, the company experienced a decline in take rates, primarily influenced by lower gains from foreign currency hedges and a shift in the mix of volumes from large merchants. PayPal also introduced novel on-ramps and off-ramps to facilitate Web3 payments for its clientele residing in the United States. This service will facilitate the conversion of digital assets held by cryptocurrency users into USD, allowing for a direct transfer from their wallets to their PayPal accounts.
