Visa was hit by the declining global spending and economic uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic but has shown strong signs of recovery over the past few quarters. As a result of travel restrictions imposed in various parts of the world to combat COVID-19, the cross-border volume remains under stress but is expected to recover sharply once vaccines facilitate the reopening of borders. The management stated that the pandemic has prompted more consumers to use debit cards and the new escalating e-commerce culture is also a driver of debit card transactions. Visa has a large debit program as compared to its closest competitor, Mastercard and could act as a positive for the company in the current environment. Moreover, despite the COVID headwinds the company witnessed excellent growth in payments volume and the number of processed transactions, thus evidencing improvement in operating conditions.
