Akamai Goes All-In On AI Cloud — Can CIS Offset Delivery Weakness?
Akamai Technologies, Inc. delivered a mixed but forward-looking first quarter of 2026, reflecting progress in its strategic shift toward cloud infrastructure services (CIS) with a particular focus on AI-driven workloads, alongside continued strength in its security portfolio and ongoing challenges in its traditional delivery business. Total revenue for Q1 reached $1.074 billion, representing a 6% year-over-year increase as reported, driven primarily by a 40% increase in CIS revenue to $95 million and an 11% growth in security revenues to $590 million. These gains were partially offset by a 7% decline in delivery and other cloud applications revenue, a trend attributed to the lingering impact of the Edgio transaction completed in 2025. The company highlighted significant strategic milestones, including the announcement of a record $1.8 billion, seven-year commitment from a leading frontier model company to leverage Akamai’s cloud infrastructure for AI workloads, as well as a prior $200 million deal.
