Academy Sports’ 12.8% E-Commerce Surge — Can Digital Growth Offset Softer Store Traffic?
Academy Sports and Outdoors reported second quarter fiscal 2026 sales of $1.6 billion, reflecting a 3% increase year-over-year but a slight comparable sales decline of 0.4%. The company’s e-commerce segment showed robust growth with sales up 12.8%, contributing positively to overall penetration in this channel. New store openings also assisted comps with mid-single-digit gains. Despite inflationary pressure and softer traffic from lower-income households (down high single digits), the company experienced favorable traffic growth among higher-income customers (up high single digits), a trend that persisted into the early part of the second quarter. By category, hard goods such as sports and recreation (up 6%), driven by soccer gear benefiting from the World Cup effect, and fitness equipment like treadmills delivered solid growth. Outdoor products grew 4%, with shooting sports and camping gear highlighted areas.
