H World Group: Initiation of Coverage- Could China’s Hotel Recovery Be the Secret Catalyst Behind Its Asset-Light Growth Engine?
H World reported its first quarter 2026 results reflecting a continuation of recovery and growth in the hospitality industry, particularly in China’s domestic market. The company highlighted sustained domestic travel momentum, enabled by supportive government policies such as extended spring breaks, which helped balance passenger flows across peak and off-peak periods. Concurrently, inbound tourism benefited from expanded visa-free policies, contributing to the demand environment. Structural mismatch between hotel supply and consumer demand persists in China, and H World is driving supply-side reform and hotel network optimization consistent with national development guidelines. The company achieved a 14.1% year-over-year increase in rooms in operation within its China segment (HWC), alongside a 17.4% increase in group hotel gross merchandise volume (GMV) to RMB 26.4 billion. Member-booked room nights rose 10.7% year-over-year to 60 million. Its asset-light monetized and franchise (M&F) business posted 20.3% revenue growth to RMB 3.0 billion and a 20.7% increase in gross operating profit to RMB 1.9 billion, with a strong operating margin of 63.3%. Average daily rate (ADR) in China increased 4.5%, driving a 3.0% rise in blended revenue per available room (RevPAR), marking sequential improvement versus the prior quarter. H World maintained focus on the economy and midscale segments with core brands HanTing, JI Hotel, and the new Hi Inn, consolidating its leadership in China’s mass market.
