Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) has spent years being the clearest winner of the artificial intelligence boom. It sells the chips that power many of the world’s largest AI systems. Now, however, its role is getting broader. The Nvidia OpenAI deal marks a major expansion of that role. Nvidia has agreed to provide a guarantee of up to $105 billion supporting OpenAI’s massive Ohio data-center project. It will also invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, the SoftBank-owned developer behind the site.
That creates a new question for investors. Is Nvidia simply selling into enormous AI demand, or is it increasingly helping create the financial conditions that allow that demand to exist?
The answer is not straightforward. Nvidia’s guarantee is not a blank $105 billion check. It is tied to lease, power, and residual-value protections if OpenAI defaults. At the same time, Nvidia could ultimately generate hundreds of billions of dollars from OpenAI-related infrastructure. That makes the arrangement both strategically compelling and financially worth watching.
Nvidia OpenAI Deal Is Turning Nvidia’s Balance Sheet Into An AI Growth Engine
The Ohio project shows how Nvidia’s role in AI infrastructure is expanding beyond chip sales. Nvidia will be the exclusive chip supplier to the site. The facility could eventually reach 8 gigawatts of computing capacity. OpenAI has signed a 20-year lease, while the first 800 megawatts are expected online in 2028.
Nvidia’s guarantee can reach $105 billion, but the structure matters. The company is not guaranteeing every dollar of OpenAI’s obligations. Instead, it will cover certain lease and power commitments while supporting a minimum value for the site.
If OpenAI defaults, the landlord would first try to recover value by re-leasing or selling the property. Nvidia would cover the remaining gap up to the agreed guarantee.
That still represents a major strategic commitment. The Nvidia OpenAI deal also fits Nvidia’s broader capital-allocation philosophy. During its latest earnings call, management said strategic ecosystem investments help “drive market growth” and strengthen Nvidia’s long-term position.
This is the key shift. Nvidia is increasingly using financial strength as part of its competitive strategy. Capital is becoming another tool alongside CUDA, networking, GPUs, and software.
The Bull Case Is That Nvidia Is Locking In Enormous Future Demand.
There is a simple bullish interpretation of the Ohio deal. Nvidia has visibility into AI demand that few companies can match. It is using that visibility to secure scarce infrastructure before competitors can.
Land, electricity, and grid access are becoming major constraints on data-center development. Nvidia can help remove those bottlenecks while locking its hardware into projects that may run for decades.
The potential revenue is enormous. Jensen Huang has said the Ohio site could contribute as much as $200 billion in Nvidia revenue. Across OpenAI’s broader planned infrastructure, Nvidia could generate roughly $600 billion through 2030 from 16 gigawatts of compute deployments. The Nvidia OpenAI deal therefore ties one of Nvidia’s largest financing commitments to one of its biggest potential future revenue streams.
The latest earnings call also supports the idea that AI demand is already broad and accelerating. Nvidia reported $75 billion of Data Center revenue in the quarter, up 92% year over year. AI-cloud revenue more than tripled. Nvidia also said it has visibility to roughly $1 trillion of Blackwell and Rubin revenue from 2025 through calendar 2027.
Management’s argument is straightforward: compute capacity creates revenue for customers. If that view holds, helping finance infrastructure may simply be a way to accelerate profitable demand rather than manufacture it.
The Risk Is That Nvidia Is Becoming More Financially Tied To Its Customers
The same strategy creates a more uncomfortable question. How independent is AI infrastructure demand if Nvidia increasingly helps finance the projects buying Nvidia hardware?
This does not mean the Ohio project is automatically circular financing. Huang has rejected that characterization. OpenAI remains responsible for paying its lease, and Nvidia’s guarantee only becomes relevant under specific downside conditions.
Still, the relationships are becoming more interconnected. Nvidia is investing in ecosystem companies. It is helping customers secure capacity. It is supporting financing structures. It is also backing infrastructure that will ultimately purchase enormous amounts of Nvidia equipment. The Nvidia OpenAI deal brings all of these issues into sharper focus.
That increases exposure to customer credit quality and project economics. It could also make future AI spending harder to interpret. Investors may need to separate demand created by independent customer economics from demand enabled partly by Nvidia’s own support.
Nvidia itself has highlighted financeability as an advantage. Management said its compute platform is not only high-performing but also “the most economic and financeable.” It also noted that the resale and rental market around Nvidia hardware helps support infrastructure financing.
That may strengthen Nvidia’s moat. It also means financial engineering is becoming more important to the AI growth story.
August 26 Could Show How Far Nvidia Wants To Take This Strategy
Nvidia’s August 26 earnings report now carries more significance than a normal quarterly update. Revenue, margins, and Blackwell demand will matter. Yet investors may also focus closely on how management discusses financing.
The biggest question is whether the Ohio agreement is unusual or the beginning of a broader playbook. The Nvidia OpenAI deal could become the reference point investors use to judge that strategy.
Nvidia has already shown that it is willing to deploy substantial capital around the AI ecosystem. At the end of Q1, it reported $145 billion of total supply commitments, inventory, and prepayments. It also generated a record $49 billion of free cash flow during the quarter.
That financial capacity gives Nvidia flexibility that most semiconductor competitors simply do not have.
The August 26 call could therefore offer clues about future guarantees, infrastructure investments, customer financing, and residual-value support. Investors may also listen for comments on OpenAI concentration and Nvidia’s broader capital strategy.
The key issue is not whether Nvidia can afford these commitments today. Its cash generation suggests that it can. The more important issue is how large these commitments could become if AI infrastructure requirements keep expanding at their current pace.
Final Thoughts
Nvidia’s Ohio agreement changes the conversation around the company. It is no longer enough to think of Nvidia only as the chip supplier behind the AI boom. The company is increasingly becoming an investor, infrastructure partner, financing facilitator, and risk-sharing participant in the same ecosystem that buys its products. The Nvidia OpenAI deal captures that shift in a single transaction.
That can be a powerful competitive advantage. Nvidia can use its scale to secure power, data-center capacity, and long-term GPU demand. It can also support customers while making Nvidia-based infrastructure easier to finance.
The trade-off is greater financial entanglement with those customers. The more Nvidia supports AI infrastructure directly, the more investors may question how much demand is independent of that support.
Valuation makes that debate especially important. As of August 17, Nvidia traded at roughly 21.3x LTM enterprise value to revenue, 32.7x LTM EV/EBITDA, and 34.5x LTM earnings. Those are still elevated multiples for a company of Nvidia’s size.
The valuation therefore reflects substantial expectations for continued growth and strong returns on AI investment. If Nvidia’s financing strategy strengthens demand without weakening project economics, those expectations may remain supported. If customer risk and capital commitments rise faster than returns, the valuation could become harder to justify.
That is why the $105 billion OpenAI guarantee matters. It is not simply another AI deal. It is a test of whether Nvidia’s balance sheet can become an additional competitive moat without also becoming a new source of risk.
