Cal-Maine Foods’ 72% Conventional Egg Sales Drop — Is The Worst Over?

Cal-Maine Foods reported third quarter fiscal 2026 results amid ongoing strategic transformation efforts in a challenging supply environment. Net sales declined 53% to $667 million versus the prior year, driven largely by a 72% drop in conventional egg sales due to significantly lower selling prices and modestly reduced volumes. Specialty egg sales also decreased 12%, with prices down by nearly 17% but volumes up 5.8%, reflecting continued growth in this segment. Prepared Foods sales more than quadrupled year-over-year to $63.6 million, though they decreased slightly quarter-over-quarter due to temporary network optimization and expansion activities. Gross profit fell by over 80% to $119.3 million, and operating income dropped 94% to $35.9 million, reflecting notably lower shell egg prices partially offset by reduced egg purchase costs. Net income attributable to the company was $50.5 million, down 90%, and diluted earnings per share were $1.06 compared to $10.38 last year.
