Rush Enterprises’ Peterbilt Expansion: Is The Truck Cycle Finally Bottoming?

Rush Enterprises, Inc. reported first quarter 2026 revenues of $1.68 billion with net income of $61.5 million, or $0.77 per diluted share, alongside a declared quarterly cash dividend of $0.19 per share. The commercial vehicle market remained challenging, marked by historically low retail sales and ongoing effects from the freight recession, excess capacity, and economic uncertainty. Despite these conditions, the company expressed the view that this quarter may represent the cycle’s trough, citing early positive signs such as improved freight rates, increased miles driven, and rising customer optimism, all of which contributed to greater quoting activity and order intake, particularly among large fleet customers. However, these indicators had not yet translated into sustained truck sales strength. Rush Enterprises’ diversified business model showed resilience, with aftermarket leasing, rental segments, and disciplined expense management underpinning profitability amid weak truck sales.
