Dell Earnings Preview: AI Server Boom Faces a Margin Test

Dell Technologies heads into its fiscal second-quarter FY2027 report on Tuesday, September 1 with one of the most unusual earnings setups in large-cap technology. This Dell earnings preview comes as Wall Street expects roughly $45.19 billion of revenue and $4.91 of adjusted EPS, both slightly above Dell’s own guidance framework. Traders are pricing roughly a 10% post-earnings move after the stock has risen about 260% in 2026.

The obvious debate is AI demand. Dell shipped $16.1 billion of AI servers last quarter, booked $24.4 billion of new orders and exited with a $51.3 billion backlog. Demand clearly exists.

The more interesting question is what happens underneath that revenue.

AI servers are scaling dramatically faster than Dell’s higher-margin businesses, memory remains scarce, and management is targeting only mid-single-digit operating margins on AI systems. This quarter tests volume; the next two quarters test whether that volume can become a structurally better earnings engine.

The Priced-In Scenario: Dell Earnings Preview

Wall Street is already expecting an extraordinary quarter.

Dell itself guided to $44 billion to $45 billion of Q2 revenue, with the $44.5 billion midpoint representing roughly 50% year-over-year growth. Management expects approximately $15.5 billion of AI-server revenue and adjusted EPS of $4.80, plus or minus $0.10. Current consensus has crept above those levels, with analysts looking for roughly $45.19 billion of revenue and $4.91 of adjusted EPS.

That distinction matters because Dell is no longer being judged against the expectations that existed before Q1. The company demolished those expectations in May, reporting $43.8 billion of revenue and $4.86 of adjusted EPS, then lifting its full-year revenue outlook to $165 billion-$169 billion and its adjusted EPS expectation to $17.90 at the midpoint. It also raised expected FY2027 AI-server revenue from $50 billion to $60 billion.

The narrative expectation is consequently close to a beat-and-raise. Evercore has argued that Dell can exceed estimates and raise guidance again, while JPMorgan has similarly seen room for another full-year increase. That is a much more difficult setup than simply beating management’s published numbers, and it is a central tension in this Dell earnings preview.

Margins create the complication.

Investors already know that AI mix depresses Dell’s consolidated gross-margin percentage. Q1 non-GAAP gross margin was just 18.1%, with management explicitly attributing the pressure primarily to AI servers. Yet ISG operating margin still reached 10.5%, up 80 basis points year over year, because traditional-server margins held, Dell IP storage performed well and enormous revenue growth created operating leverage.

So the market can probably tolerate another ugly-looking consolidated gross-margin percentage if the underlying operating economics remain intact. What it cannot easily absorb is evidence that every incremental dollar of AI revenue is becoming less valuable.

The Metric That Actually Matters

This is the cleanest KPI for understanding Dell’s AI economics because it captures several moving pieces at once. AI-server revenue carries relatively thin operating margins. Traditional servers provide another profit pool. Dell IP storage carries richer economics. Services can improve the value of an AI deployment. Pricing determines how much component inflation gets passed through. Scale determines how much revenue falls through the operating-cost structure.

Q1 demonstrated how powerful that equation can be. AI servers generated $16.1 billion of revenue—roughly 56% of ISG revenue—yet ISG operating margin still increased to 10.5%. Management said AI-server profitability remained in line with its mid-single-digit operating-income-rate target and traditional-server margins remained stable.

That distinction is critical.

Dell does not need AI-server operating margins to resemble Nvidia’s economics. Nvidia just reported a 75% companywide gross margin as demand for accelerated computing continued to surge. Dell occupies a very different point in the value chain: it purchases expensive GPUs, CPUs, memory and networking components, integrates them into increasingly complex systems, deploys those systems and supports them.

The investment question in this Dell earnings preview is therefore about mix absorption.

If Dell can keep AI-server operating margins around the mid-single digits while attaching more storage and services, maintaining traditional-server profitability and spreading operating expenses across a much larger revenue base, AI can still create enormous incremental operating income even as the consolidated gross-margin percentage declines.

But there is another side to that equation. If component inflation rises faster than pricing, storage attachment disappoints or competitive bidding reduces AI-server profitability, then rapidly expanding AI revenue could mechanically push Dell toward a lower-quality earnings mix.

That is why a $1 billion AI-server revenue beat accompanied by deteriorating ISG economics could matter less than a smaller revenue beat accompanied by stable or improving margins.

Tomorrow’s most important question is not how much AI Dell sells. It is how much profit Dell keeps.

The Bull Case Is A Better-Quality Beat

The cleanest upside surprise would not simply be AI-server revenue exceeding the roughly $15.5 billion management forecast.

It would be Dell beating that number while also delivering the sequential improvement in ISG operating margin that management has already signaled, keeping AI-server profitability near its mid-single-digit target and showing further progress in storage attachment.

There is a credible path to that outcome.

Dell entered Q2 with $51.3 billion of AI backlog after booking $24.4 billion of orders in Q1 despite shipping $16.1 billion during the same period. Management said its five-quarter AI pipeline remained multiples of backlog and continued growing across neocloud, sovereign and enterprise customers. The number of AI customers has passed 5,000. Demand, according to management, is not the bottleneck.

Meanwhile, storage provides a potentially underappreciated earnings lever. Dell said last quarter that it was selling more storage and services into AI customers, particularly its own higher-margin storage products. Unstructured data infrastructure is especially important because AI systems need enormous datasets to train, infer, retrieve and continuously operate.

That means the ideal earnings configuration is not simply “more servers.” It is larger AI deployments pulling along storage, networking, services and eventually broader Dell infrastructure. That broader attachment story is one of the most important upside variables in this Dell earnings preview.

Nvidia’s latest quarter reduces one major source of uncertainty. Its Q2 FY2027 revenue reached $96.2 billion, more than doubling year over year, providing another indication that underlying accelerated-computing demand remains extremely strong.

If Dell combines that demand environment with stable AI profitability and stronger attachment, the psychology around the stock changes subtly but importantly.

The market would have more evidence that Dell is not merely processing huge amounts of expensive Nvidia hardware through a thin-margin manufacturing and integration model. Instead, it would support the argument that AI is creating enough scale and adjacent revenue to expand absolute profits across the infrastructure franchise.

For a stock already priced for exceptional growth, the upside surprise needs to be about earnings quality, not merely revenue quantity.

The Bear Case Starts With The Same Backlog

The $51.3 billion AI backlog looks unquestionably bullish at first glance. It is also where some of the earnings risk begins.

Dell has been unusually explicit that it does not have a demand problem. It has a supply problem.

Management identified DRAM and NAND as major constraints, alongside CPUs and, further down the chain, hard drives and other components. Jeff Clarke told analysts that Dell was effectively repricing constantly because the inflationary environment was changing so quickly.

That pressure has not disappeared. TrendForce said today that server DRAM prices continue to rise amid supply deficits and capacity being absorbed by HBM, leaving suppliers with strong bargaining power. Its broader Q3 outlook calls for server DRAM contract prices to rise approximately 13%-18% sequentially.

The risk is not necessarily that Dell suddenly loses access to components. Dell has one of the largest technology supply chains in the world. The risk is the economic friction created while converting backlog, a mechanism that sits at the heart of this Dell earnings preview.

A customer ordering an enormous AI cluster months before delivery does not automatically lock in Dell’s eventual profitability. Component costs can move. Configurations can change. Deployment schedules can slip. Customers can resist repeated pricing adjustments. The mix of GPUs, CPUs and memory can make systems more expensive without producing proportional operating profit for the integrator.

There is also a less visible demand risk. Management acknowledged that some customers are buying ahead because they fear future shortages and rising prices. That does not make current demand artificial, but it complicates comparisons later. Orders pulled forward into FY2027 are orders that may not need to be placed again immediately afterward.

This is where the market could react badly even to strong headline revenue.

If Dell reports exceptional AI-server sales but ISG operating margin fails to improve sequentially, AI profitability slips below the targeted range or management becomes more cautious about passing component inflation through to customers, investors may begin questioning the quality of the backlog rather than its size.

The downside surprise is not weak AI demand; it is discovering that enormous AI demand carries less incremental economics than the valuation now assumes.

What Matters After Tomorrow

The next two quarters could be more revealing than tomorrow’s headline beat or miss.

Dell expects to finish FY2027 with meaningful AI backlog. That means the company is effectively telling investors that the current order book extends beyond the fiscal year and that supply availability, rather than customer appetite, determines the near-term ceiling on shipments.

Memory therefore remains one of the most important external indicators. If DRAM and NAND availability improves while pricing stabilizes, Dell gets more flexibility to turn backlog into revenue. If supply remains structurally tight into 2027, the company may still generate extraordinary revenue but face a more difficult pricing and working-capital environment.

Vera Rubin is another important transition. Dell is already preparing infrastructure around Nvidia’s next-generation rack-scale platform. These systems should push the industry toward increasingly dense, integrated deployments involving compute, networking, cooling and storage.

That could benefit Dell because complexity favors companies capable of designing, manufacturing, installing and servicing entire racks rather than selling individual servers. But greater system value does not automatically mean greater margin percentage. The economic question remains how much proprietary Dell content travels with the increasingly expensive Nvidia stack.

Storage attachment may therefore become one of the best indicators of Dell’s longer-term positioning. The more PowerScale, ObjectScale, PowerStore and related services Dell can place alongside AI compute, the less its AI thesis depends exclusively on low-margin server assembly.

Traditional servers also deserve attention. Dell reported 92% growth there last quarter, helped by refresh demand, higher memory content, customer efforts to secure supply and emerging inference and agentic-AI workloads. If that demand remains strong after the initial buy-ahead period, Dell’s opportunity becomes broader than the GPU cycle alone.

For investors using this Dell earnings preview as a framework beyond the immediate print, over the next 6–12 months, the key issue is whether Dell turns its AI-server position into a wider infrastructure franchise before hardware economics normalize.

The Pre-Mortem

Dell enters this earnings report in an enviable operating position and a demanding market position.

The company has already demonstrated that AI demand is real. A $51.3 billion backlog, $24.4 billion of quarterly orders, more than 5,000 AI customers and a $60 billion annual AI-server forecast make another debate about whether corporations are actually buying AI infrastructure largely beside the point.

What matters now is interpretation.

A revenue beat driven by more expensive AI hardware is not equivalent to a revenue beat accompanied by stable AI-server profitability, sequential ISG margin improvement and higher-margin storage attachment. Likewise, a lower consolidated gross-margin percentage is not automatically bearish if operating-income dollars continue scaling rapidly.

Valuation raises the stakes. Based on the TIKR data through August 28, Dell trades around 36.47x LTM diluted earnings and 22.64x LTM EBITDA on an enterprise-value basis, versus roughly 15.26x and 9.30x, respectively, at the end of January. On forward numbers, the stock is around 23.72x normalized earnings and 15.81x EBITDA.

That is a substantial rerating of what investors believe Dell can become.

Tomorrow can provide another data point supporting that transition—or reveal that revenue has moved faster than the underlying economics. As this Dell earnings preview underscores, the headline numbers will matter, but the more consequential signals will be ISG margin, AI-server profitability, backlog conversion, component pricing and storage attachment.

Those are the metrics that will determine whether Dell’s $60 billion AI-server boom is creating a larger business, a better business—or some combination of both.
