Matson’s $129.4 Million Profit Quarter — China Strength Offsets Hawaii Weakness!

Matson, Inc. reported strong financial results for the second quarter of 2026, driven primarily by robust performance in its China service. The company raised its full-year outlook, reflecting favorable market conditions including sustained demand in e-commerce, garments, and electronics, alongside tight supply dynamics in the Transpacific trade lane. Container volume in the China service increased 15.2% year-over-year, contrasting with a 1.1% decline in the Hawaii service volume, attributed to reduced general demand. Other trade lanes such as Guam experienced a 4.4% volume increase, while Alaska’s container volume decreased 2.3%, impacted by lower seafood exports. Regional service expansion into Southeast Asia also contributed positively, with cargo from this area increasing to approximately 20-25% of China service volume, aiding diversification efforts. Operating income rose $45.9 million year-over-year to $158.9 million, with Ocean Transportation accounting for the majority of the increase, partially offset by higher vessel operating expenses largely due to fuel costs.
