Workday Silver Lake Buyout Math Hinges On Earnings &AI Growth

Workday reports fiscal second-quarter results Thursday, August 27, with an unusually complicated setup as the Workday Silver Lake Buyout remains part of the valuation debate. Ordinarily, investors would be focused on whether subscription revenue lands near management’s roughly $2.455 billion outlook, whether cRPO growth holds within the guided 13.5%-14.5% range, and whether the company preserves the margin improvement established last quarter. This time, those numbers are only half the story.

 

Silver Lake has reportedly been discussing an acquisition of Workday, putting one of enterprise software’s most important AI debates directly inside the earnings event. The obvious question is whether Workday beats or misses. The more consequential question is whether Thursday changes what Workday is worth as a standalone company—and therefore what a leveraged buyer could rationally pay.

 

That creates a timing tension. This quarter will test whether the Q1 recovery was real. The next two quarters may determine whether AI can turn that recovery into a durable reacceleration rather than a temporary improvement in bookings.
