Description
IBM’s $5 Billion AI Security Bet Could Change The Internet Forever!
International Business Machines is making one of its boldest AI-era moves yet, committing $5 billion with Red Hat to Project Lightwell, a new initiative designed to secure open-source software supply chains for large enterprises. The plan is ambitious: deploy a global force of 20,000 engineers, supported by advanced AI, to identify, test, fix and validate security vulnerabilities across huge volumes of open-source code. That matters because open source has become the invisible foundation of modern business, powering banks, payment networks, cloud platforms, enterprise apps and AI systems. IBM says more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies rely heavily on open-source software, while AI is making it easier for bad actors to find exploitable flaws faster. The key question is whether IBM is building a trusted safety layer for the digital economy, or gradually positioning itself as the gatekeeper of enterprise open source.
