Carpenter Technology’s $187 Million Record: Can Aerospace Demand Drive Another Breakout?
Carpenter Technology Corporation reported a third quarter fiscal 2026 performance marked by record operating income of $187 million, a 20% sequential increase over the previous quarter’s record, supported by accelerating demand in key end-use markets and continued operational improvements. The Specialty Alloys Operations (SAO) segment notably delivered an adjusted operating margin of 35.6%, up from 33.1% in the prior quarter and 29.1% a year ago, driven by productivity gains, product mix optimization, and pricing actions. SAO’s operating income reached a segment record of $208 million, reflecting both top-line growth and margin expansion. The company’s overall sales excluding surcharge rose 10% year-over-year, supported by a 15% increase in volume, while gross profit grew 25% compared to the prior year quarter. While aerospace and defense markets showed strengthening and accelerating demand—especially in aerospace structural materials with increasing bookings—the medical market experienced a decline, with sales down 29% year-over-year and 9% sequentially.
