Roblox Lawsuit Shock: Profits Over Kids’ Safety?

Louisiana has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, alleging that the popular gaming and social platform has allowed widespread child exploitation by prioritizing revenue growth and user engagement over user safety. The suit, filed in Livingston Parish’s 21st Judicial District Court, accuses Roblox of “willful disregard and deceptive practices” in failing to implement adequate safeguards to protect minors, who make up the majority of its 112 million daily active users. While Roblox has highlighted its recent rollout of AI-powered monitoring systems such as Roblox Sentinel, as well as new safety features including age estimation and parental controls, regulators allege these measures are insufficient in addressing systemic safety risks. The case underscores a critical tension between rapid user growth and platform safety obligations. Against this backdrop, Roblox is investing heavily—allocating 22% of operating expenses to trust and safety in the most recent quarter—yet the lawsuit raises questions over whether its current framework can withstand increasing regulatory and public scrutiny.
